RECEPTION OF IMMIGRANTS.

ro tee editor.

Sir,—At tho interview with tho Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates on Monday morning, _ following on the representations previously made to the Hon. Mr Nosworthy (Minister of Immigration), tho absolute necessity was urged of a receiving depot in every centre where migrants Hand, and where the people that nominate them should give a guarantee that they can do theii* duty by them on arrival. A great number or the people who nominate their friends

often, through the length of time between nominating them and their arrival. find on arrival that they themselves are out of work, and it is impossible to provide lor another family. Also it was urged that in the case of all artisans and others arriving their doctors’ certificates, etc., should be examined immediately at port of arrival, or an interim certificate should be given them until they can be put through their necessary tests. In many cases they have to wait several months before they can start, and often lose a job through waiting so long. The receiving depot should be used for securing suitable situations, and jobs should be guaranteed for at least six months, not for a week or two, as is now the case. It is not absorbing the immigrants to give them a week or two’s 1 work, and then send them adrift. I am asking for a fair chance for my people to make good, and I am quite I sure, given a fair chance, they will be i a credit to the country of their adop-1 Uon.—l am. etc., ' Orpah Jonps-Neilson, President Immigrants’ Club, March 30.
