EARTH CURRENT WIRELESS TOWER.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—A year ago last January you bad an inspiring editorial on wireless power. It might interest you to know that I suggested earth current wireless power to the New Zealand Government in April, 1925 That is, to have a small cubical section (3ft ly 3ft) of the earth’s crust (running for hundreds of miles perhaps) carrying a current of uniform strength. This would bo accomplished by- putting a strong current to earth at one place, whose direction was downward from machine to earth. At soma other point (say, 100 miles away) a current of equal strength, whose direction would be upward from caith to machine, is also put to earth. I feel confident that if these currents were strong enough the section of earth in between could be made to act as a wire and carry a current of uniform strength throughout its entire length. Many years ago a large London power station was accidentally short-circuited tc earth, and telegraphs using earth return were affected as far south as Paris and away to the North of England! This s a wireless power that is undoubtedly possible. Why not lot us get after it and see what it is actually worth? Of course, the Government politely informed me it “is impracticable at present.” It is up to the people to try it out for themselves. —I am, etc., A. Chapplt:, P W.D. Electric Camp. Mercer. March 27. P.S.—One of these machines would have to give an alternating current of quite low frequency, so that the total result would be a slowly pulsating current for inducing into an insulated circuit for use.—A.C.
