VOTE BY DECLARATION
FIRST RECORDED UNDER NEW ACT fPsn United Press Association,! AUCKLAND, March 30. Votes of ratepayers by declaration have been recorded' at Newmarket for the first time in New Zealand under the terms of last year’s Local Elections and Polls Amendment Act. section 12, which orovidos for voting hv declaration in the,case of persons who are informed by a returning officer on the day of the poll that their names are not on the roll. A poll was token-at Newmarket yesterday on a local proposal to raise C4.P00, and on the recorded votes it was defeated by four votes. There.are, however, thhty-seven votes by deciaraThe returning officer <Mr H. Wilson) reported to the borough council this waning that the scrutineers had hushed their work and a recount had he-en completed, hut he was not yet in a position to announce the result owing ;o the fact that the votes by declaraion had not been counted lii this ■ratter he did not intend to take any >ction until he had obtained legal advice as to the correct procedure to be allowed within the meaning ol the Act.
