SEVEN SEAMEN CHANGED TWO HOW IMPRISONMENT IMPOSE!) [Pts United Press Association.! AUCKLAND, March 28. Seven seamen who were brought before the court were charged with pillaging cargo from the steamer Middle-, sex. Five pleaded guilty. Counsel for the agents of tho vessel slated that these men went into the holds with naked lights, and might easily have set the ship on fire. Ihe company did not want the accused aboard again. Mr W. It. M'Kean, S.M.. said that they could be kept in custody until the Middlesex left for Wellington. Each was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment, to be placed on hoard the ship before it finally sailed. Chief-detective Cummings staled, that tho pillaged cargo ran into linn dreds, if not thousands, of pounds “Why should New Zealand have R put up with these criminals t” he asked. Two other men, in whose qnarlcn pillaged goods had been found, pleadet not guilty. They both stated tha Bacon ? one of the first lot charged, had given them the stuff, which they dumped overboard.
