BOOKMAKING PROSECUTIONS
“ NOT A DRIVE," SAY POLICE
ISpKCIAL TO TUB ‘ StAH.’]
CHRISTCHURCH, March,2B.
The simultaneous prosecution of alleged bookmakers in various parts of the dominion has led to the belief that .the police are making a concerted drive, but the - police authorities deny that anything in the nature of a drive is being attempted. “ It is not so,” declared Inspector A, Cameron, when approached this afternoon. “Wo' arc not making a drive. We are out to catch these men at all times. Just as quick as they come along wo will: prosecute them. 1 know that people suspect that a drive is being made, but they’re wrong. ■ “It is just'a coincidence, then, that there have been so. many prosecutions in-different parts during the last week or two?” he was asked.
“That is-right-,” was the inspector’s reply. “There’s no drive about it. We’re always- out after these men. Sometimes we don’t get the evidence to prosecute, and’the public does not hear about those cases. It is just a coincidence, asjyou say, not a drive.”
