GALA DAY AT MACANDREWS

The gala day which was held in Cap* tain Coll M'Donald’s picturesque grpunds, Macandrew’s Bay, on Saturday afternoon proved a very successful affair. It was held under the auspices of the Wharfdal© section of the local Queen Carnival, which is being run for the purpose of raising funds for the reclamation of a recreation area. The carrying out of this work is going to fill a long-felt want in the district, which has no suitable playground for the children, as well as providing a picnic ground for visiting city parties and families. The afternoon was line, though somewhat overcast at times, and the large gathering seemed to enjoy the outing. During the afternoon a sports programme was held, there being keen competition in tho various events, while the baby show proven! an attraction, the winners being Mrs Mitchell and Mrs M'Aulay. Several tents and a large maiquce wore erected on the grounds, the latter being used for afternoon ten, and the ladies in charge had a busy time attending to their patrons. The tents were used for side shows and stalls of various kinds, and the attendants appeared to do good business, those in charge of them being :—Afternoon tea—Mesclames Brqnkmnn, Carrod, Gibson, Hitchcock, Smith, and young lady helpers; sweets, Mcsdames Riddel! and Scott; bran tub and ice creams—Mcsdames Niven, _ Kellot*.. and Shurrock; produce and jumbleMessrs Duthic, Gibson, and Rattray; baby show, Mcsdames Riddell and Scott. In the morning a baking and sweets competition was held, the prizes for which were secured os follows: Pikelets, Mrs Hook; girdle scones, Mn W. N. Riddell; oven scones, Mrs Rattray; nut loaf, Mrs Scott; plain sponge, Mrs Burns; iced sponge, Mrs Kelly; shortbread, Mrs Milward; variety small cakes, Mrs W. N. Riddell; cocoanut ice, Airs Carrod: special prize (box of sweets) to stall with best takings, produce nuid jumble. At the conclusion of the afternoon the committee waited on Captain and Airs M'Donnld, when, the chairman conveyed thanks for the kindness shown in placing the grounds at their disposal, the captain expressing his pleasure at being able to assist in a small way.

In the evening a successful a.nd enjoyable social was held m the hall, when there was a large attendance of dancers and others, excellent music being supplied by the Mcjicanq Orchestra. With the same object in view the Colipdell section is holding a garden fete im Mr Barling’s grounds on Wednesday next (Anniversary Davl. Tho committee has made all arrangements for an enjoyable day’s outing for those in holiday mood, and a statable timetable is being run by the bus seme Hot water, tea, and sugar will be obtainable on the grounds.
