The Hon. G, J. Anderson, Minister of Mines and Labor, attended the jubilee celebrations of the Tuapeka County Council at Lawrence last night, • #nd continued down through Gatlins to Waikawa to-day. To-morrow he will visit Quarry Hills and Tokanui, arriving at Invercargill in the afternoon. On Saturday he will go to his home at Gore. Mr Anderson will return to Wellington early next week, probably on Tuesday. Mr P. Knewstubb, manager of the Kinta Tin Dredging Company : at Batugajah, Malay States, arrived _in Port Chalmers on Wednesday evening on holiday leave. Mr Knewstubb has been absent from Port for about two and a-half years, and will return to the Malay States in about-two months’ time. Mr E. H. Olds loft to-day for Auckland to attend the New Zealand swimming championships. On January 28 he sails for America, where he will take up permanent residence. The Rev. Father Hyland, of Sydney, who has been conducting missions throughout the diocese of Otago, left this morning on his return to Australia. Father Hyland was recently appointed president of the Douglas Park College, Sydney. A London cable message states that Mr David Hunter, an ex-Yorkshire wicket-keeper, dropped dead at Scarborough. .. . ... Mr V. W. Russell, solicitor, of Ashburton, who has been spending a holiday in Dunedin, went north to-day. Mr R. M. Firth, who was recently the district tourist manager at Invercargill, passed through Dunedin this morning on his way tb Wanganui, where he will take up a similar position. , , A Loudon cablegram states that it is rumored in banking circles in London that Mr Scott, of the London branch, will be appointed governor of the Commonwealth Bank. A London cable announces the death of Baron Hardinge’s daughter, Mrs Diamond Evelyn Abercromby, who was bridesmaid at the Duko of York’s wedGeorge, Murray, Chancellor of Adelaide University, speaking at the annual commemoration, which was held last month, mentioned the accession of Dr C. S. Hicks, formerly of Dunedin, to the staff as one of the important gains the university had enjoyed during the year. Dr Hicks joined the staff of tlm university as lecturer in human physiology, hut, m recognition (the Chancellor said) of his singuar merits and and in order to afford some relief, to Professor T. Brailsford Robertson,- the Senate had created a new Chair of Human Physiology and Pharmacology, and conferred it upon Dr Hicks. The Sheridan Research Fellowship is held by Dr Hicks in conjunction with the chair. A Cambridge Press Association tele* gram states that the Hon. John Fisher, one of the best-known pioneers of the Waikato district,, passed away this morning at his home at Pukerimu, where ho resided continuously for seventy-one years. He 1 had been associated practically with every local body and good object in the district. He was for many years a member of the Legislative Council, retiring in 1921. He leaves a widow, five sons, and three daughters, all residents of the district. Among the new guests at the Hotel Carlton are Messrs 0. T. Evans, A. E. Ackroyd, A. W. Stanley, R. G. Richardson, and E. J. Preen, and Mrs W. E. Hay-M‘Kenzie (Wellington), Mr R. Callan (Waimate), Mr J. T. Stevens (Sydney), Mr and Mrs A. C. and Miss A. Dickie (Auckland).
