GERMANY'S ARMY AND NAVY
HEAVY EXPENDITURE,

LONDON, January 11
The Berlin correspondent of ‘ The Times ’ states that the military and naval estimates have caused much misgiving, showing a considerable increase over last year. The military estimates have been increased by 7,000,000 marks, and the naval estimates by 30,000,000 marks. The army consists of 3,798 officers, 20,671 non-commissioned officers, and 72,329 others. Ten million marks are allotted to the artillery for practice, 3,000,000 marks for autumn manoeuvres, and 32,000,000 marks for munitions.
The increases are attributed to the rise in wages and prices. The critics point out that they are steadily increased from year to year. For example, in 1926 the expenditure was 64,000,000 marks more than in 1925.
The naval increase is attributed to the proposed new construction, but the hulk of the money is required for the replacement of obsolete vessels. It is asked whether, apart from the coastguard and scientific services, Germany’s/ expensive navy serves any useful purpose.—‘ £ha Times* -
