FIRST ROUND GAMES [Per United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, December 28. s The chess games commenced last night in the dominion championship were continued this morning, with the following result: — FIRST ROUND. Roberts v. Severne.—Roberts successfully defended, and a draw resulted. Davies v. Hughes.—Hughes resigned early after resumption, the loss of a rook being inevitable. Pleasants v. Fenwick.—Pleasants won early after resumption. Jones v. Erskine.—Another Sicilian Defence, which is very even. Erskine has a pawn to the good, but the bishops are of opposite colors, and a draw is the obvious result. Jiloir v. Gyles (Queen’s Gambit Declined), a draw being agreed to. SECOND ROUND DRAW. The draw in round two, which commences this afternoon, is: Severne v. Davies, Fouhy v. Roberts, Hughes v. Bullock, Fenwick v. Jones. Fairburn v. Pleasants, Erskine v. Dunlop, Miller v. Burry, Gyles v. Kclling. Moir has the bye.
