LIBEL ACTION DROPPED
HOWARD ELLIOTT AHD THE CRITIC [Pek United Piiess Association.] WELLINGTON, December 9.. Arising out of certain allegations in an open letter that appeared in ‘The Critic,’ the Rev. Howard Elliott filed a claim in the Magistrate’s Court recently to recover £2OO damages for libel, on tho grounds chiefly that tho letter implied that he curried an automatic pistol in his pocket. When the case was mentioned to-day before Air Riddell, S.M., counsel for defendants said that Elliott had filed a notice of discontinuance. Defendants had applied to have the matter dealt -with in the Supreme Court, so that tbo truth or otherwise of tho allegations could bo ascertained. Defendant asked substantial costs, considerable trouble having been gone to in preparing the defence.
This was opposed bv Mr Boyer (for Elliott), he saying that he was prepared to nay a reasonable amount in view of the fact that he had the action discontinued. Mr Riddell allowed £3 3s.
