PRISON TO AFFLUENCE
LARGE ESTATE INHERITED JOYFUL CELEBRATIONS. Press Association—ily Telegraph—Copyright ROAIE, November 20. An unusual scetne occurred at the gates of the Padua Prison, when Nino Gilli, a poor tradesman, who had been sentenced to two years’s 'mprisonment for fraudulent bankruptcy, was released. His wife, relatives, and a crowd of friends arrived in motor cars and whirled Gilli away joyfully to elaborate celebrations.
Tlie cause of the jubilation was that G-illi while in prison unexpectedly inherited a large estate and a bank account amounting to about £173,000 from a grand-aunt in California with whom he had never even corresponded. Gilli, after the news was confirmed, was unable to sleep, but be was treated with all the consideration possible under the prison rules. Ho had, however, to servp his son ton ce, less throe months remitted for good conduct. He announces that he will build a hospital in his native town of Ferrara. Already ho has applied for a passport to California.
