“ Civil marriages are becoming mor® popular over the country generally,” states a London registrar, who attributes the increase to the fact that a civil marriage is less expensive than a religious cerenony. “I do not think,” he added, “that the increase in the number of civil marriages reflects a slackening of the religious beliefs of the people.” From 1919 to 1924 the proportion of ,civil marriages was 24 per cent, of the total.
