Messrs Dalgoty and Co., Ltd., have been advised of the doatb, after a sudden illness, of Uie Bight Hon. the iiari of Chichester, who had recently been appointed to the board of directors. Mr N. Galbraith went by train to Christchurch to-day. Mr W. B. Giesen, of Kotorua, brought his Otago visit to an end this morning. Mr A. Piddington went back to Timaru to-day. Mi's J. A. Johnstons, booked for Auckland, travelled by the 11.30 train to-day, Captain Hunt left for Oamaru this morning on defence business. The Bev. A. W. Stace, who is transferring from Kurow to Lawrence, went back to Kurow by train this morning after a visit to his new parish. Mr Walter Hill, whose death occurred yesterday, was one of the best-known business men in Christchurch, and had always taken a very prominent part in local body government. In addition to carrying on business as a woolbroker, he was chairman of the Christchurch Drainage Board, a position which he had'held for nineteen years. Mr Hill was a brother of Sir James Hill, Bart. He was born at Harden, near Bradford (Yorkshire, England). Thirty-five years ago the late Mr Hill camo to New Zealand as representative of Sir James Hill and Sons, Ltd., of Bradford, wool buyers, and in addition to carrying on his own business be remained the Now Zealand representative of that firm. During the war Mr Hill took a great interest in Bed Cross work. He was president of the New Zealand Woolbuyers’ Association, aud was instrumental in forming that body. For many years bo was bon. secretary and treasurer of the association. Periodically he visited England on business, and be bad made two trips since the war ended. .It is seldom that a man with such wide and exacting business interests as .those possessed by the late Mr Hill can find time for any form of public lifs and service, yet he bad for nineteen years occupied' the chair of the Christchurch Drainage Board, and also been associated with other local bodies, -including the Christchurch Tramway Board—Christchurch correspondent. At yesterday afternoon’s meeting of the Otago High Schools’ Board members approved of the rector’s recommendation that the General Harry Pulton Scholarship of £2O per annum, teuable for three years at any college of the New Zealand University, be awarded this year to William Alco Priest, ,of Upper. V.a Form, a son of Mr M. H. T. Priest. This pupil baa had a creditable career in the school, both as regards class work and in the outside life of the school. He matriculated last year, and took prizes for English and for Navy League essay, coming second in the total for form subjects, and winning the senior writing prize. He is a prefect of the school, and has been a member for three years of the first fifteen, of which he is deputy-captain. He has also been a member of the first cricket eleven from 1923-26. In athletics ho was runner-up for the senior championship this year, and in Cadet work he has also done efficient service.

Mr 0. J. Wilson, of Wellington, left for the north this morning. The death 'occurred at his residence, Pacific street, this morning of the Rev. H. B. Winsbury White, et the early age of 39 years. Deceased was one of the most popular padres at Trentham Camp and Featherston during and after the war, and was the last chaplain to he demobilised. Prior to that ho was vicar of a Blenheim parish, and after his camp service he was appointed, to the parochial district of Wirkcua ti. For some months prior to death he was working in the social service department of the Anglican Church in Dunedin. He is survived by his wife and one child. Tire body will be interred at Waikouaiti. Staying at the Grand Hotel are Mr W. C. Robinson (Auckland), Messrs J. I». Dempster, C. M'Olury (WelUneton), Mr E. A. Adams (Christchurch), Mr Thomas Flemming (Timaru), Mr and Mrs A. D. and Miss Bell (Shag Valley). Guests at the Eaoclsior Hotel include Mr S. Thompson (Meboume), Mr E. S. Stevens (Sydney), Mr and Mrs Ranin (Wellington), Mr and Mrs.O. H. Burns (Christchurch), Mr and Mrs R. Blaikley (Invercargill). Recent arrivals at the City Hotel include Mr W. E. Allen (Wellington), Miss B. Cutting (Christchurch), Messrs T.' and T. Sfllwood (T'raaru), -Mrs and Misses Darling, Mr J. Simpson (Oamaru), Miss C. Brewer, Messrs T. A. Nicholson, R. Witt, and D. M'Connochio (Invercargill). At - the weekly practice of the Moegiel Municipal Band, Mr John Williamson, who acted ns secretary at the recent queen carnival in aid of the band funds, was presented with a case of gold-mounted pipes in recognition of the _ services \he had rendered. Tho presentation was made by Mr A. Fi. Queloh, who referred to the strenuous task Mr Williamson had had in acting as' tho carnival secretary. Among those at the Carlton Hotel are 'Messrs A. H.
