THE ROYAL TOUR

DUKE AND DUCHESS OF YORK DUNEDIN ARRANGEMENTS Additional details of the visit of the Duke and Duchess of York to Dunedin were contained in a letter from the Hon. R. F. Bollard, which was read at the City Council meeting last night by the mayor (Mr H. L. Tapley, &LP.). The letter read as follows: With reference to your telegram of the 10th hist., as intimated in the Press yesterday, their Royal Highnesses will arrive at Dunedin by train from Christchurch on Tuesday, March 15, the hour of arrival will be ' advised you later. ilie Royai visitors propose to remain in Dunedin until Friday, 18th idem, when they will leave by train .for Cromwell. The time of departure will also bo advised you as soon as available.

A gathering of tho school children of the city and surrounding districts ’ seems especially desirable on an occasion of this kind, and the Government has accordingly authorised free railway transport to the centres visited by the Royal party for all children in Standard 111. and upwards, conditional upon thoir being able to return home the same day. The local Education Board will bo requested to jnake the necessary arrangements for assembling them. As already also intimated in the Press £he Government will subsidise and arrange for tho validation of any reasonable expenditure incurred by local bodies in connection with the reception and entertainment ot the Royal guests. The maximum subsidy available for Dunedin will be £I,OOO. Tho Government anticipates that your city and the local bodies will co-operate in extending to their Royal Highnesses a hearty welcome, and will be glad if you will submit early a draft programme of your proposals for approval. The Mayor said that committees /ould later be sent up to carry out irrangements. They were all looking forward to this visit, and he was sure that their Royal Highnesses would be welcomed with the same hospitality, loyalty, and enthusiasm that had been shown to the Prince of Wales and our present King when they visited here.
