GARDENING CLUB

FLORAL DECORATIONS The Dunedin Gardening Club held its Fortnightly meeting on Tuesday evening, when there was a good attendance. The evening was devoted to floral decorations, and as this was the only meeting on the syllabus where prizes were offered, a good deal of interest was shown. Although the prizes were limited to the amateur members, there over thirty entries for all classes. Mr John Whyte and Miss M‘lntyre officiated as judges, and awarded the following prizes:— Best vaso of flowers (eight entries) —• Miss Burgess 1, Miss Paterson 2, Mrs F. H. Hollingworth _3. Bowl of flowers (eight entries) —Miss Paterson 1, Mrs Hollingworth 2, Mrs Burgess 3. Floral basket (five entries) —Miss Paterson 1, Mrs Hollingworth 2, Mbs Sinton 3. Gentleman’s buttonhole (four entries) —Mrs Hollingworth 1, Mr W. Blackburn 2, Miss Paterson 3. Lady’s spray—Miss Paterson 1, Mrs Hollingworth 2, Mrs John Rhodes 3. Miss MTntyre gave a practical demonstration of table decoration. She also exhibited a beautiful bridal bouquet, done with Princess Mary violas, apricot azaleas, and maidenhair fern. In addition to the entries for prizes, there were exhibited some splendid flowers. Mr J. _ Fleming _ and Mr W. W. Holmes exhibited pansies and violas, which showed the very best selection and cultivation. Mr Fleming also exhibited geraniums of very fine coloring. Miss Cutten showed a new variety of poppy and delphinium; Miss Laing saxafragus; Mr L. Fraser stocks, antirrhinums, and pyrethiums. The judge (Mr John Whyte) congratulated the club on its display, and also the exhibitors who had come forward in such numbers, on the quality of the exhibits. Mr Jas, Nelson, in moving a vote of thanks .to the judges and those who had assisted, said it was very gratifying to the members of the committee to see such interest taken in the display. The motion was carried by acclamation. It was decided that the club be represented at the forthcoming horticultural show. "
