STATUE OF ST. GEORGE

GIFT TO DUNEDIH Dunedin is soon to have a statue of St. George. It will be presented by H.R.H. the Duke of York during his visit. ■ This was anounced by the mayor (Mr H. L. Tapley, M.P.) at last night’s meeting of the City Council. He said he had received a letter from the Minister of Internal Affairs announcing in the following terms a presentation to the city:— I have the honor to inform you that advice has been received through His Excellency the Governor-General from the Right Honorable J. G. Coates, Prime Minister, that His Majesty’s Government has presented a statue of St. George to the City of Dunedin as a memento of British participation in the Exhibition, and that His Royal Highness the Duke of York has consented to make the presents tion on the occasion of his visit to Dunedin in March next. . Will you kindly arrange, therefore, for the ceremony to be included in the Dunedin programme. The Mayor said it was good to think that the British Government had decided to mark its ’ appreciation of the effort that was put forward in Dunedin during the Exhibition by making the presentation of the statue of St. George. He was sure the present would be very greatly appreciated. Cr Hancock: Where will you put it? The Mayor: I expect you will want it for your reserves. He went on to say that the site would depend very largely on the size of the .statue.
