1 "" otago centre Meeting ■ Tho monthly meeting of the Otago Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association was held last light, Mr E. L. Macassey presiding. CORRESPONDENCE AND GENERAL. Tho Secretary of the New’ Zealand Amateur Athletic Association wrote stating that with reference to the proposed American tour, it was decided at a special meeting of tho council to proceed, and to cable to the council’s American representative inviting two athletes—lT. Osborne, if available, and a sprinter for 220yds and 410yds, the terms being tho same as last year. It was pointed out that the Auckland Centre was tho only centre that was not agreeable to fall in with the original scheme as outlined. If Auckland was not agreeable to co-operate, tho dates allotted to that centre would bo, cancelled.—Received. Advice w r ns received from the council of the Now Zealand Amateur Athletic Association stating that the question raised by Otago and Auckland in regard to profits on foreign tours had been considered by the council, it being decided that no alteration ho made in connection with tho present proposed tour, hut that centres be asked to discuss the matter at tho next meeting or conference of centres.—Received-

Minutes received from a meeting of the council of tho N.Z.A.A.A. stated it was decided to incorporate the following in tho pew rules tp be discussed at the annual meeting:—“That in order to avoid any recurrence of the dissatisfaction expressed bv several competitors over this year’s "Now Zealand crosscountry championship course at Auckland, in future the centre controlling such meeting should forward to tho council and to the various centres concerned a sketch plan of tho course over which it was proposed to contest the race.”

It was decided to instruct tho centre’s delegates to support tho motion, with tho addition that a description of tho course should also ho given. GENERAL.

Tho Civil Service Club was granted permission to hold an evening meeting on November 17, all tho events being open to members of any chib. In addition to the 75yds, 300yds, I,oooyds, and one mile and a-halt cycle handicaps, a 100yds ladies’ handicap is included on the programme. Mr A. Urquhart was appointed to represent the centre as a delegate on the council of the N.Z.A.A.A. SECONDARY SCHOOL CHAMPIONSHIPS. On behalf of the snb-committeo appointed to go into the matter of tho secondary school athletic championship meeting, it was reported that replies had been received from the Otago Boys’ High School, Christian Brothers, M'Glashan College, and Southland Boys’ High School, all of which seemed favorable to tho meeting being held, though there was some question at issue in regard to the date. The committee recommended that the meeting be gone on with, the provisional date for the fixture being either November 27 or December 11, the final allocation being left in the bands of the chairman. The programme for the senior section was drawn up ns follows; —100yds, 220yds, 440yds, 830yds, one mile, high jump, broad jump, 120yds hurdles, and onemile medley relay. The junior section (for boys under fifteen on October 1) was comprised of 100yds, 220yds, 140yds, high jump, and broad jump. It was recommended that each school be allowed three competitors in each event, in which certificates would be awarded for first and second places. Shields would bo awarded for tho champion school in the senior section and the junior champions, and gold medals had been promised for tho two boys gaining most points in the senior section, and similarly for two in the junior section. It was recommended that 100yds, 410vds, one mile, 800yds relay (for teams of four), one-milo cycle, and three-milo cycle open handicaps; high jump, 75yds, and relay ladies’ handicaps; a primary school boys’ (under fourteen) 100yd,s handicap, and primary school girls’ (under fourteen) 75yds handicap also he included on the programme, making a total of twenty-

three events. The sub-committee’s recommendations were adopted, the programme being approved. ANNUAL REPORT.

The report to bo presented at the annual meeting on _ Tuesday evening next states, inter alia: — A tour of two American champions, Messrs Jackson V. Scholz and Lloyd Hahn was arranged. Your centre guaranteed £75. Of this amount the Invercargill Club provided £25 for a meeting, and received a third of the profits allotted your centre. Tin’s tour of such two first-class performers created an increased interest in,amateur athletics throughout the dominion, and a higher standard of performances can be looked for in the near future. The day on which the visitors competed at Dunedin was fine, and the attendance of the public was fair; and both visitors put up excellent performances, and delighted the spectators with their running. During thoir stay in Dunedin they were ever ready to give advice to those wishing to know of the various training methods employed in America.

The New Zealand cross-country championship was contested at Auckland over a course decidedly not “cross country,” but comprising several laps of a racecourse and many hurdles. Although the centre’s team requested a “ cross-country ” course, this was not granted. The centre’s team, comprising J. W. Tapp (captain) 11th, W. H. B. Hobbs 4th, E. L. Brown 6th, W. N. Connell 9th, W. MUndoo 14th, G. Hctherington 15th, secured second place with 30 points; Auckland IS being first, ’Wellington 38 third.

The Otago concluded the summer season, which, it is pleasing to note, was an improvement on past seasons, both from athletic and financial aspects. The Civil Service H. and A.A. Club won the “List” Shield for most points in championships; and Mr H. D. Morgan gained the Reid Cup. which now becomes his property, ho having won it three times.

The centre was favored with the control of the New Zealand championships. carried out on March 19 and 20, tho Wellington Centre annexing the, shields. Tho centre was represented ' by 'a large team, and those successful in gaining medals were G. S. Cabot (one and three-mile walks). H. D. Morgan (440yds hurdles and 120yds hurdles), R. W. Lander (120yds hurdles, which carries the G. P. Keddcll Memorial Trophy, competed for for tho I first time), C/ M. Olsen (second ! 440yds and 830yds). _ Several events were included for ladies, and tho Wellington Centro, which had sent five representatives, gained all tho prizes. Canterbury Centre also sent lady representatives, The Dunedin Harrier Club again put on the Edmond Cup Steeplechase Race, and this season the Caversham H. and A.A. Club won the Cup, E. L. Brown, of the Civil Service H. and A.A. Club, being first to finish. Cargill Rond H. and A.A. Club won tho Sealed Handicap, competed for for the first • time. The annual Port Road Race drew a large field this year. W. Buskin, of the Pacific H. and A.A. Club, won the Hooper_ Cup; while B. 6. Cox, of the University H. and A.A. Club, gained fastest time. The Otago Cross-country Championship was contested over a course at Wingatui. The Caversham H. and A,A. Club won the interclub banner, Pacific H. and A.A Club won tho sealed handicap, and C. IV, Frye was first to finish*

LADIES' CLUB

MEETING OF COMMITTEE. A meeting of the executive of the Dunedin Amateur Athletic Club was held in tho Y.W.C.A. last night, Mr E. L. Macassey presiding over a good attendance. It wns decided to write to the Otago Centre of the N.Z.A.A.A. asking that the president or his nominee should attend the meetings of tho Ladies’ Committee. . t 7 Mrs Richard Hudson was appointed vice-chairman of the committee. A sub-committee consisting of Misses. R. MTvcnaie and Peake and Messrs E. L. Macassey, J. H. List, and B. G. Isaacs was "appointed to draw up the constitution and rules of the club for a report to a further meeting of the committee. , , , Miss Hall moved that the club should hold a ladies’ evening meeting, followed by a social, at the Caledonian Grounds in November, this being seconded by Miss M'Kenzie and carried. A sub-committee consisting of Misses Hall. Holmes, Saxon, and Anderson was appointed to draw up the programme and report to the next meeting of the committee.
