■ -*-• —■ —■ WEDNESDAY; OCTOBER 20. (Before Mr J. IE Bartholomew, S.M.) THEFT OF CIGARETTES ALLEGED. Philip John Edward Hancock was charged with breaking and entering by night a shop in North-east Valley and stealing a quantity of cigarettes, tobacco, and papers of a total value ol £ll 4s. Detective Beer, in asking for a remand, stated that the offence had been committed the previous evening, and accused was arrested last night by Dc-< tcctives Boycroft and Bussell. He was a married man, with one child. He (lid net know whether any other charges would bo brought against accused. • . Accused was remanded until I 1 rulay week, bail being allowed in sell of £IOO and two sureties of £SO. He was also ordered to report daily to tbo police. DEMANDED.
John Hayes was charged wilh breaking and entering by night the Terminus Hotel, Outram, and three bottles of whisky, valued at .'lss, (ho property of Thomas AValter I* ord. Detective Beer explained that the Inun was only arrested last evening, and he asked for u remand until Friday week. He was in a bad way through drink.' The Accused : I would like it to-day. The Magistrate said this would be impossible, and accused was remanded until Friday week. MAINTENANCE.
A charge of having Jailed to maintain his wife was preferred against John Benedict M'Carthy. Mr White appeared for complainant and Mr Haylce for accused. Defendant’s counsel said that a warrant should never have been issued, as tlio facts would disclose the extraordinary position time the wife had taken proceedings against her husband on the very day she had seen him off at the Dunedin railway station. Mr AVhite alleged that defendant went to Wolliiifiton with another woman. Accused was remanded until Friday next, AVilliam Arthur Middlcditch was charged that 'ho loft New Zealand without having made provision for the. maintenance of lus wife and two children. Mr Hanlon, who appeared for complainant, said that defendant had left his wife and children, telling them that lie. had work to go to in the south. He wont south all right, stated counsel, but bo happened to land at Bluff in time to catch a steamer for Australia. A warrant bad been issued, and defendant was brought back immediately. The accused was remanded until Friday, bail not being allowed.
