PORTOBELLO ROAD BOARD
The monthly meeting - yesterday afternoon was attended by Messrs E. A. Gibson (in tho chair), J. Miller, J. T. Irvine, J. W. Sheppord, J. J. Malcolm, A. S. Grigg, W. J- Jj€wis, and T. Landreth.
Mr J. R. Marks, district engineer, advised that in connection with unemployment twenty-five men were to bo placed on the Dnnedin-Portobello road to excavate material at tho more dangerous points, and fill in at the bends, m order to improve alignment of the road generally. The work had been arranged too quickly to consult the board, but its approval of the work was desired. —It was decided to express approval of the work, the chairman and another member to consult the engineer in regard to details. Tho Presbyterian Social Service Association again asked for an entrance to the Girls’ Home at Grant’s Braes, the Secretary stating that as £33 was paid in rates last month tho expenditure of £3 or £4 in providing an entrance was not an unreasonable request.—Received. Mr J. R-. Marks, district engineer, wrote for details in connection with a claim from the board for £IOO for maintenance metalling of Beach road from Gill’s Corner to Maori LineDetails to be supplied.
Mr Malcolm stated that he attended the Motor Club’s meeting and was very favorably impressed with Mr Anscll’s proposal for improving tho roads. Tho members generally agreed that it was a good proposal for the Peninsula. Mr S. Solomon, K.C., attended the meeting, and details in connection with the formation of a county council wore discussed.
Mr W. M. Armour, Health Inspector, attended and discussed the problem of sanitation in Macamlrew township. Something would have to he done there, and liquefying tanks discharging into the harbor would probably meet the situation. The inspector'suggested that a public, meeting ho hold. Ho considered it would he advisable perhaps to fix a rating area, as that locality was in a somewhat unique position in 'regard to sanitation, owing to being so closely settled. The Hoad Board was tho responsible body. —lt was resolved that the members of the North-cast Harbor subdivision call a public meeting of the ratepayers and place the urgency of the position Ixv fore them. Mr Armour agreed to attend the meeting.
