EMPIRE UNITY

FOSTERING BETTER UNDERSTANDING AUSTRALIA’S PART. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright OTTAWA, September 9. Sir William Vicars, of Sydney (director of Vicars Limited), who lias made a trip across Canada, said : “ 1 feel that the people of Australia to-day look towards a closer-knit Empire rather than towards the disintegration of the British Commonwealth of Nations. Wo are trying to in close touch with the heart of the Empire, and look to a bettor understanding, both on the part of the colonies and the Mother Country. We believe that wo should share the responsibilities of Empire defence, and towards this end wc are increasing our navy and not fooling ourselves by keeping a battle squadron which is totally obsolete. Wo plan to do what is practically possible for a young country to do, and do not intend to rely entirely on the kindness of the Mother Country or impose on her. The improvement of interdominion communication by wireless and cable is a great factor in fostering a better understanding with the Empire, which is being manifest to-day by the means of this close and speeedy communication. Questions of vital importance may be discussed, and a decision arrived at in an incredibly short space of time.”
