THE AMERICAN SEMBATIOH CHARGES AGAINST DAUGHERTY AMD MILLER Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright, NEW YORK, September 9. (Received September 10, at 9 a.m.) The Government has unfolded a veritable detective story, by which it expects to provo that Daugherty aud Miller defrauded it. The United States Attorney (Mr Emory Duckner) made his opcuung statement to the jury, and promised to prove, among other things, that 391,000d0l worth of Liberty bonds came into the possession of the late John King, a Republican National Committeeman; that 50,000d0l worth of these bonds was traced directly into tho possession of Miller; that the day after King collected 2,125d0l worth of coupons from 100,000dol worth of Liberty bonds; and that a deposit of that amount was paid into Daugherty’s bank account. Mr Duckner told how Richard Merton, of Frankfort, Germany, negotiated through Daugherty’s confidants for a return to tho Swiss Corporation, which he controlled, of 7,000,000dnl worth of assets of the American Metals Company seized during tho war by Miller as alien property custodian, the assets being ordered to bo returned after much negotiation.
