Contrary to the . official nows, despatches from the Frahco-Spanish frontier last night reported that the situation in Spain was\ still grave. The ‘ Daily Express/ in a lengthy account of the crisis, says; “General De Rivera told King 'Alfonso that it was -essential that a corps of artillery officers should be dissolved and the loaders arrested unless there were to bo anarchy throughout the army. King Alfonso refused, and. upon this General Do Rivera, threatening to resign, produced a series of reports from the political police showing that the extreme parties of Republicans, Anarchists, Conunnnists, and Catalan Separatists were fully prepared for immediate action. Tie declared that w,better his policy were right or wrong the fall of the Dictator would plate not only public security, but the throne itself, in danger. King Alfonso reluctantly signed the decrees for martial law and the dissolution of the corps, hut he refused absolutely to arrest seven highlyplaced leaders. The King’s action took the Oppositionists by surprise. They wore relying upon the known differences tetwoon King Alfonso and the Dictator. Hence the revolutionary plans miscarried. A general rising in Barcelona was averted by midnight arrests. Important developments are expected following to-day’s council meeting.”
