THE BLUE-BOTTLE FLY
“ The latest instance of an insect costing millions to tho unfortunate country importing it is _ that of the blue-bottle fly in Australia. There it has spread and increased so formidably, infesting stock, that three years ago it killed I "during the twelvemonth more than £3,000,000 worth_of sheep,” writes Mr N. Tourmcns, in ‘ Chambers’s Journal.’ “ Theoretically, every insect has its own enemy or enemies. So science sets out to destroy the destroyer by means of the destroyer (or destroyers) of destroyers. “ For example, the -English bluebottle or blow-fly now so preying on the sheep stock of Australia has certain parasitic enemies. . Steps have been taken to introduce its enemies into Australia, and they will bo given bine-bottle grubs. “ In these they will hay their eggs, and then tho parasite-infested grubs, after having been sent out to tho sheep runs, _ will hatch out there; and the parasites will in turn destroy tho destroyers of tho sheep.”
