LONDON, August 15. ,■ (Received August IG, at 12.55 p.m.) A sensation has been caused m the book world by the sale of a copy of ‘ Tho Pilgrim’s Progress,’ which was sent to the sale room by a descendant of Oliver Cromwell, who was not aware limb it had any value On examination it was declared by experts to bo a first edition, upon which it was sold to Mr Quaritcli, tho well-known dealer, for £6,800. Next day ho returned it on account of the discovery that there wor© five lines of errata in the last page, which arc not present in the only first edition known. Air Quaritcli said that it was tho .second issue of tho bonk.

The final stage in tho incident is tho announcement of its resale to Hie same buyer at a lower price, though experts are divided on the question whether the cr/ata increases or decreases the value.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
