PLANTING ON SAND DUNES
DENMARK'S EHIERPiIiSE Denmark lias during a protracted period been engaged m iransiorming the sand dunes (the Khtter) along the ivest coast of Jutland into plantations, and there are now some thirty plantations, with an aggregate area of about 32 DUO hectares, of which 20,000 hcc- . tares have been planted upon, and an area of 3,000 hectares do not for various reasons lend themselves to plantation. • The total area of sand dunes and adioiuintr moorland in Denmaik amonnts°to about 90,000 hectares. _ Tne end in view was to create a strip or belt of forest and thicket along as much of the west coast as possible. Much has been done, and more will be done, and the flight of the'sand has been got under. The new sand dune inspector, Vilhelm Pinholb, who is a member of the Eolketing, has already for a considerable tune been connected with this protective work, and he will, among other tasks, pay special attention to the renewal of the oldest plunof the Jutland sand dunes was first made during the reign ot lviiig Christian 111., when the inhabitants of the district in question wore torbidden to graze their cattle on tne dunes so as not to destroy what natural vegetation there might he. _ It was, however, not till tho beginning of tbe nineteenth century that planting began on tho dunes, comp lIS’ sory work by the people of tho Districts, but it did not amount to much. A decided move, however, was made m the fifties, and tho Legislature passed the necessary Act. A fresh Act was passed in 1867, and since then the work has been steadily proceeded with along almost tbo whole of the west coast of Jutland.
