THE LATE MR GEORGE R. HERCUS
REFERENCES IN CHURCH Although the interment of the lata George R. Hercus was announced as private, owing to his aversion to all publicity and parade, a large number of citizens met at his home in Albert street on Saturday to pay the last tribute of respect to his memory. Some thirty cars formed tho funeral cortege, which proceeded to the Northern Cemetery. The service was conducted by the Revs. A. H. Collins and Eric Evans, and the grave was covered with wreaths sent by societies arid friends, who held Mr Hercus in high esteem. His loss is keenly felt by the Hanover Street Baptist Church, of which he had been an honored member and deacon for tho past thirty years. Fitting reference to his sudden removal was made at the morning service yesterday by the acting minister, Rev. A. H. Collins. The congregation met (h« said) under the shadow of a great sorrow, hut also in the light of an immortal hope. Tho tears of Jews in the bereaved home at Bethany both sanctioned and sanctified the grief which death caused. He would not wound the cherished memory of their friend by any eulogy. He was one of the great gifts of Clod to the world and the church. Ho was one of God Almighty’s gentlemen— devout, _ gracious, and generous in girt and in judgment. In the world of commerce he was shrewd and strong, yet kept himself uncontaminated. In his beautiful home life he radiated cheerfulness. No words could tell what ho was to the church of his choice. He served it unostentatiously in many ways, and contributed to it with open-handed generosity. To such men death was but an incident, a promotion to richer and fuller life. The worthiest way in which, his memory could be honored was by the members of the church ho loved imitating his example and carrying .on the work to wiiich he so unsparingly devoted himAt the evening service the choir rendered ‘ The Homeland,’ in memory of tho departed elder, and at the communion service Mr Collins made further reference to his excellencies of character and service, and expressed the synmathy of the church towards the bereaved family.
