IN BATHING COSTUMES
DANCES ON THE BEACH MOCK HYMNS TO UKULELES. LONDON, July 30. Mixed dancing in bathing costumes on the beach and mock religious services with ukuleles accompanying hymns, have incensed the clergymen of New Brighton, where the seashore is occupied by 600 week-end tents. One councillor asserts that O.stend is ontrivalled. and one minister says that the behaviour of the young people is barbarous. He told them they were heading towards damnation. Special police supervision has been requisitioned for the August bank holidays. p
Sweet-hearting is encou<raged by the Wortley Rural District Council’s prohibition of motor traffic in two delightful local tree-shaded lanes, in order to reserve them solely for lovers, enabling men and maids to court undisturbed by motor .horns and unperturbed by headlights. Lady Mabel Smith, a member of tbe council, says motorists can take other routes instead of interfering with the happiness of lads and lasses.
