Mr Cobham arrived, and was enthusiastically greeted by enormous crowds. DISORDERLY SCENES. MOB RUSH PLANE. MELBOURNE, August 16. (Received August 16, at 9.40 a.m.)
Disorderly scenes marked the arrival of Mr Cobham on the completion of his flight. A crowd of 15,000 was waiting at the landing ground at the Essendon aerodrome, and, as Mr Cobham was landing, the mob broke the cordon and ran towards the machine. When Mr Cobham unexpectedly turned towards the enclosure there was a frantic rush to get clear of the propeller, and many people had narrow escapes. _ Slight damage was done to the machine, and the temporary broadcasting plant was trampled underfoot. The police available were quite inadequate to maintain order. Dozens of women and children were crushed in the crowd, and had to be treated at the ambulance station. The official welcoming party were swept away. Mr Cobham bad to be rescued by Air Force men.
