INSTITUTE OF SURVEYORS

ANNUAL CONFERENCE

[Pee United Press Association.]

AUCKLAND, August 11. A number of matters of interest to surveyors were discussed at tho conference of the New Zealand Institute of Surveyors, which opened to-day. Mr F. J. Ledger, of Nelson, tho president of the institute, presided over an attendance of forty delegates. Dealing with tho registration of engineers, tho chairman stated that the Engineers Registration Act was being administered in a manner very different from what was contemplated when tho Act was passed in 1924. The council of the institute was engaged in collecting particulars of apparent hardship, with a view to taking action in cases whore it felt an injustice had boon done. It was understood the Prime Minister had suggested to the Engineers’ Registration Board that it should reconsider any applications which the council of the institute should recommend for a rehearing. ,r 'nvever, tho speaker believed the board was disinclined to follow that course, holding that the institute was not entitled to interfere in its decisions. It was agreed that the matter should not he allowed to drop. The council had recommended to the Minister of Lands and the Public Service Commissioner tho appointment of inspectors of survey for tho more efficient chocking of field work. The unsatisfactory practice prevalent in some provinces of accepting diagrams on transfers without a survey had also been placed before tho RegistrarGeneral, and he had promised to take such steps as were in his power to limit such a procedure, and to seek for uniformity. Throe vacancies on the council were filled by the re-election of Mr M. H. Miller Auckland), Mr C. Barker and Mr C. Hastings Bridge (Christchurch). Mr W. S. Wheeler was reappointed auditor. Mr Preston Chambers was elected a fellow of the institute. It was decided to hold the nest annual meeting in Napier.
