PARTY OF SNEAK THIEVES
YOUNG MAN SENTENCED FOR ■“ RECEIVING "
FIVE YEARS’ REFORMATIVE DETENTION.
Hugh James Collins appeared liefore His Honor Mr Justice Sim this morning for sentence for receiving stolen goods, he knowing them to have been dishonestly obtained. The - case against accuser! arose out of the theft of a lady’s underclothing from the Hotel Carlton. Mr E. J. Anderson (for the prisoner) ; “ Nothing I can say, sir, will assist the court or the prisoner.” The Crown Prosecutor (Mr F. B. Adams) said he had nothing to add to the police report. His Honor, said there were a number of previous convictions against the prisoner. Mr Adams said the list showed some acquittals. His Honor said the list of previous convictions should not have a statement of acquittals. Mr Adams replied that they were usually shown*. Learned counsel said prisoner was in company with Duggan and Griffiths •—it was really a party of sneak thieves. Duggan had been caught, and Griffiths had not been. There seemed no doubt that all three were concerned in the affair. His Honor said the best course would be to give the prisoner a long term of reformative detention. He would order Collins to be detained for reformative purposes for a term of five years.
