Sporting critics (regard Mlie Lenglen's decision to become a professional as a bombshell, which may have a farreaching effect upon lawn tennis. It is conceded that Mile- Lengleu has no particular financial reason for throwing up her amateur status, as she has a good income through films and the writing of books and newspaper articles. Her income from photograph fees alone is considerable. The change will prevent her from competing at the Riviera and Wimbledon- tournaments, and may even affect her exhibition play. The ' Daily Chronicle,' after discussing tho matter with leading English amateurs who are now playing at Eastbourne, says that there is no general move towards professionalism, but the players are unable-to say what may happen if promoters organise exhibition" tournaments. Mllo Longlen, with her parents' consent, signed a contract with an American (Mr Charles Pylo) for exhibition matches indoors and out of doors in the United States, Canada, Cuba, and Mexico for four months. It is understood that she received 110,000 dollars, plus an interest in the film rights. She will give her first exhibition on October ](). Her mother and a maid will accompany her. Mr Pylo states that Mile Longlen will meet some or the best American amateurs. Later he hopes to take her on an extended tour of the world. —A. and N.Z. Cable.
