CPEiiIHGS FOR UHEMPLOYE3 MARRIED MEN FOR RANFURLY Activity in tlio placing of the unemployed in work is being evidenced. Ten men have been informed from the Town Hall to stand by to commence work to-morrow morning on the Eorbury road. This work was expected to start to-day, but the engineer, it was reported, had to go into the details of other relief works first. The Public Works Department has instructed the Labor Department, on whoso books 212 were registered to-day as being out of work, to select filtcen men for Eanfurly. A number of married mem wero informed of ibo opportunity, but they declined. It was explained to them that the weather at Ranfurly rvas cold, and tho men would have to “rough” it for a time till tho camp was properly fixed. Tho problem of tbo single man lias not been settled. For the Ranfurly job tho Government has given instructions that only married mem of excellent physique were to be engaged. No single men wore to bo taken on. One man who put forward some deserving claims was turned down, as iio was single. The rest rooms in tho Labor Club, Princes street, have been closed down, as tho urgency for providing meals for tho unemployed has passed.

INVERCARGILL, August 2

The unemployment position in Invercargill shows little signs of improvement; in fact, the figures supplied by the Labor Bureau and information from other sources tend to indicate that the position is far from satisfactory, and is likely to become still more acute within the course of the next few days. The total registrations aro now sixty-seven, as compared with fifty-six last week.
