ARBITRATION COURT

TO-DAY’S SITTING A sitting of the Arbitration Court vi as held this morning. His Honor Mr Justice Frazer presided, and with him were Messrs W. Scott (employers’ representative) and A. L. Monteith, (workers’ representative). CABLE TRAM DISPUTE. When the Roslyn and Kaikorai cable tram dispute was called, Mr Haymos, on behalf of the union, stated that nothing had been done in the way of a> settlement. Several matters wore agreed to at the Conciliation Council proceedings, but they all depended upon the acceptance of the wages clause. His Honor suggested that the matter might be hold oyer until the court returned to Dunedin, thus give the parties a chance to arrive at a settlement. He could safely say that all members of the court would like to see a settlement, at least of the more technical matters involved. His Honor suggested that alternative proposals might be submitted to the court. 11 a conference was not held now the court might ask the parties to come together later. He took it that the employers had agreed to make alterations of the old award on certain conditions. He was afraid that unless the parties followed his suggestions for a conference the court might find itself in the dark, and put in conditions that might prove unworkable. Mr Monteith said that there was jnrt a danger, too, that if Jeft entirely to the court, matters might bo rushed through. The dispute was held over in the meantime, Mr Cookson at a later stage stating that he understood there waa a good chance of a settlement.
