BALTIC STATES

BRITAIN ACCUSED OF INTRIGUE A RUSSIAN BOGEY. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, August 1. The ‘Daily Mail’s’ Berlin correspondent says that the Russian newspaper ‘ Izvestia ’ declares that Britain is trying to unite the Baltic States, under the leadership of Poland, against the Soviet Republics. ‘lzvostia’ accuses Sir Austen Chamberlain of urging Poland to attack and annex Lithuania.

• An interpretation is that the Bolshcists have raised the Anglo-Polish scare to divert attention from Russia’s internal quarrels, desiring to frighten Lithuania and Esthonia by suggesting an invasion by Marshal Pilsudski. It is hoped thus to induce the Baltic States to create a pact or guarantee with Russia.—Sydney ‘ Sun ’ Cable.
