WOMEN’S REST HOMES.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —A stmdl amount of agitation was got up to erect this women’s rest homo at the corner of Rattray and Cumberland streets. This is a very unsuitable place. This triangle at one time had the goods station there. When that was removed a number of gentlemen waited upon Sir Robert Stout, who at that time was Provincial Solicitor, to lease this piece of ground for building purposes. This is the answer the Hon. Sir Robert Stout gave; “ No; I do not intend to allow buildings to be erected 'on tbe said piece of laud. Dunedin is very much in want of a square, and this land will bo for all time sot aside as a reserve.”
I have a very good prerppsition to make in respect to this women's rest home. I find in the Octagon, within a. few yards of each other, no loss than five churches of various denominations, and Sunday school buildings as well. If our churches opened their doors a little wider during the. week days thev would find them well occupied as women’s rest homes. The Central Mission invites women into its rest home, and tlie Roman Catholic Churches aro open day and night for women to frequent, so that I fail to sec whore there is any need for the public to be called upon to find rest homos for women.— I am, cte,., John Downie.
