MEAT WORKS CONTROVERSY

COUKTER-STROKE TO M LYSNAR

[From Oor Parliamentary Reporter] WELLINGTON Juno 30. Tho chief feature in the Address-in-Reply debate, which was continued, in tho House to-night, was the reply' of Mr David Jones, chairman of the Meat hoard to tho allegations made earlier in tho discussion regarding the Meat Board’s attitude on the sale of the Poverty Bay meat works to Vesteys. Mr Jones quoted copiously from tho Royal Commission’s report, which completely cleared him and the Meat Board from any charge that they failed to protect the public interest. Then the member for Ellesmere turned his batteries on tho meraher for Gisborne, quoting from tho Commission’s evidence to show that Mr Lysnar went to Armours for financial assistance. Tho position of the board in permitting the sale wa-s not nearly as bad as Mr Lysnar’s in trying to sell himself and in attempting to allow the Armour Company to come into this country in connection with the meat trade. Tho other night the speaker had asked Mr Lysnar if his company still owned the steamer Admiral Codrington. He replied in tho affirmative; whereas a sworn declaration by Mr Lysnar showed 'that ho had no interest in tho boat on February 23, 1924. Father tho cioclaration was true or it was false, Mr Lysnar had been an advocate of a producer’s shipping line, but tho evidence before the Commission showed that, he was prepared to sell tho vessel to tho Shaw Savill and Albion Company.
