TOLL OF THE MOTOR

HUGE AMERICAN FIGURES 22.500 FATALITIES IN 1525 CHILD DEATH RATE SERIOUS. . Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright NEW YORK, June 14. (Received Juno 15, at 9.40 a.m.) The National Bureau of Casualty and Surety Underwriters announces that, the automobile fatalities in the United States during 1925 totalled 22,500, an increase of approximately 2,200 over 1924. This is considered a conservative estimate, and is based on official figures in 198 cities. It is believed that when the final reports are received the total will bo even larger. Level railway crossings took a largo toll, increasing from 1,638 in 1924 to 1,794 in 1925.

The automobile death rate per 100,000 of population increased from 14.9 in 1923 to 15.7 in 1924, and 17.2 in 1925.

There are indications that fatal accidents are increasing in rate as well as in number.

There was an increase of nearly 2,500,000 automobiles between 1924 and 1925, the total in the latter year reaching 19,954,000. The deaths of children continue to provide the most serious aspects of the situation, 6,300 under fifteen losing their lives in'l92s.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
