Or W. B. Taverner _ (deputy-mayor arid chairman ot the Finance Committee) to-day assumed the duties of the mayor (Mr H. L. Tapley, M.P.), who has gone to Wellington to attend the session of Parliament.

Mr W. J. Guerin, chief sub-editor_of tho "Wellington ‘ Evening Post,’ died yesterday morning, aged sixty-three. Ho joined tho staff of the paper nineteen years ago, and was appointed chief sub. in 1922. Ho had not been in good health for several years. At one time ho was sub-editor and afterwards editor of the Taranaki ‘News’; then subeditor of the Hawera ‘ Star,’ and afterwards ho held tho same position on the Taranaki ‘Herald.’ He leaves n son and three daughters.—Press Association telegram. 'J. .jo Hon. R. Scott, M.L.C., and Mr F. Waite, M.P., left for Wellington by the 11.-30 train to-day. Sir John Sinclair and Mr J. M. Dickson, M.P., will ho among the members of tho Legislature who start to-morrow for the central city.

Mr H. V. Fulton started for Wellington to-day. Ho and Messrs A. S. Holmes and A. Murray are the Otago and Southland delegates to the Romney Marsh Shocpbrecdcrs’ Conference at Palmerston North. Mr W. Easton left for Wellington this morning Mr E. A. Rosevear will leave for Christchurch to-moirow morning. A. memorial service to the Into Mr Walter Wright was hold in the Maori Hill Presbyterian Church yesterday morning, the ceremony being conducted hy the'Rev. A. C. W. Standage, who referred to the good work Mr Wright had done as a deacon of the_ church and in the other phases of his life. The service was attended by representatives of all the bowling clubs in and around Dunedin, the Balmacowen Club, of which be was a member, being strongly represented. Members of the centre executive also attended to honor the memory of an old howler and a good friend.

The officials of the Supreme Court and Magistrate’s Court assembled in the Supremo Court office on Saturday morning for the purpose of making a presentation to Mr T. Kane, who has been promoted to the position of clerk of the court at Stratford. Mr B. W. Cave, registrar of the Supreme Court, ill presenting Mr Kane with a solid leather travelling trunk and a net of razors, on behalf of the staffs of both courts, referred to his uniform eourlesy to the general public, and to his obliging nature. Mr Kane left for the north this morning. At the last meeting of the Board of Management, of the U.F.S Dispensary (Dunedin) the president (Bro. E. Sunderland) made feeling reference to the death of Mr G. C. Hoffman. The following resolution was carried in silence, all standing, to he placed in the records of the dispensary:—“The Board of Management of the D.U.F.S. Dispensary places on record its sense of the great loss sustained by the chemists of Dunedin especially, and also the whole community, through the untimely death of Mr Geo. C. Hoffman, chairman of the Pharmaceutical Association, and an examiner for the Pharmacy Board. Mr Hoffman rendered distinguished service to this board as manager of its dispensary for twenty years. Ho devoted himself wholeheartedly to the interests of van’-' ons branches of science, and earned the highest respect and esteem of all who knew him well. The board expresses its sincere condolence with the widow and relatives.” Staying at the Hofei Carlton are Mr S. Mendelsohn (London), Mr G. Neville Sperry n (Birmingham, England!. Mr IT. Jowson (England), Mr T. A. Harborld (Melbourne), Mr L. I). Hammon and Mr T. C. Fraser (Auckland), -Mr E. J. Webb (Wellington), Mr J. B. Amos (Timaru), Mr Thompson (Roxburgh). Guests at, the Grand Hotel include Mr Norman Mitchell (London), Messrs A. C. Mitchell, E. T. Hindmarsh, and D. Rhodes (Wellington), Mr W. Ingle (Christchurch). A Press Association cable message from London states that the diploma of Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons has been conferred on Dr R. P, S. Kelman, of Otago.
