SEAFIELD EARLDOM
DAMAGES FOR LIBEL action' AGAINST CLAMANT. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, Juno 11. Mary Dowager Countess of Seafield nas been awarded by tho King’s Bench £I,OOO damages for libel, and her daughter Kina, the Countess of Seafield, £SOO against George Wilberforce Grant as ihe result of a letter which he wrote to the editor of the ‘ Strathspey Herald ’ alleging that Nina was not the daughter of the Dowager Countess, and that the latter was guilty of a gross imposture in putting her forward as the countess. The matter arose out of a claim in the Scottish courts by Alexander Grant that the eighth, ninth, tenth, and eleventh Earls of Seafield had no title to the earldom, but that Alexander grant ought to Lie tho eighth earl. Counsel explained that tho eleventh earl married Miss Mabel Townend, of New Zealand, in 1898, but that no child was horn to them until 1906. Counsel for tho defendant said the latter apologised for repeating the tit-tle-tattle of a Indy’s tea party. The defendant, who was a retired Civil Servant, had done a foolish thing, and would have to suffer.—Renter.
