SAILED.—June 12. Breeze, s.s. (11.6 p.m.), 542 tons, Sheppard, for Timaru. Oreti. s.s. (5.10 p.m.), 174 tons, Murray, for Invercargill. The auxiliary schooner Piri is in the Lower Harbor discharging explosives from Auckland. The Waipahi went to Port Chalmers this morning to ho docked for cleaning and painting. The Breeze sailed on Saturday evening for Wanganui via ports. THE FERRY SERVICE. The Marnroa, from Wellington, arrived at Lyttelton at 8.10 a.m. yesterday, and passengers and mails canio south by the 8.50,a.m. express to-day. EX-SOPHOCLES AND EXDIOGEXES FOR DOMINION. The Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company advises that the liner Taniaroa, late Sophocles, will leave Southampton on September 10 with passengers lor Wellington and cargo for discharge at Lyttelton and Port Chalmers. She_ is due at Wellington on October 14. The Mat .iron, late Diogenes, is scheduled to clear Southampton on November 5 for Auckland and Wellington, and is duo at Auckland on December 8. THE LARGEST LINER. As to the world's largest liner, a certain amount of misconception has arisen sometimes regarding the claims of the Majestic and of the Leviathan. The verdict of the man who designed them should be good enough to settle the question. That man is Dr Ernest Foerster, consulting engineer of the Hamburg-American Line, and he says categorically that the Majestic was built, six feet longer than the Leviathan. and that Die Majestic has the greater tonnage if the same method ot measurement be applied to both. SWAYNE AND HOYTE LINE. The Swayne and Hoyte Line steamer West Cnlera is to leave Los Angeles for Auckland, Wellington, and Lyttelton on .Inly 3. She will be followed at intervals of throe weeks by the Montague and West Lslip, in that order. This line will in future maintain a three-weekly service instead of a monthly service. PERSON A I;. Captain Donald M‘Donald has been appointed master of the Waikouaili, relieving Captain W. Martin lor sick leave. Air A. M. Lucas has been appointed chief officer of the Kaponga, relieving Mr W. Henderson, who has joined tho Tamahine, temporarily, as chief officer, relieving Air J. H. Miller for holiday leave. Mr W. J. Berryman has been appointed chief officer of the Waipahi, relieving Air A. B. Anderson for holiday leave. Mr C. G. Eustace has been appointed third officer of the Maunganui, relieving Air A. V. Knight for instructions. WHALE CHASER AT PORT. The Norwegian whale chaser Star J. arrived at Port Chalmers on Saturday from Stewart Island to undergo repairs. She was taken up by Captain Mikalsen, who is ice expert ior the whaling expedition, and who, in command of Star 1., helped to liberate the mother shin when she was jammed in the ice. Star I. also did other valuable work on the whaling cruise last summer, and it was as a result of her practical immunity from damage that the two new chasers have been fitted with ice plates at Port Chalmers. The Star 1. was similarly fitted last year. TONGARIRO FROM LONDON. The New Zealand Shipping Company advises that the Tongariro, which left London on June 9 with general cargo to discharge at. Auckland, Wellington, Bluff, and New Plymouth, is duo at Auckland on ■ July 17, 'and at Wellington a week later.
DEVON’S LOADING. The Federal Company’s Devon was td leave. Wanganui roadstead to-day for Lvttelton and Wellington. She is due at Wellington on June 19, and will leave on June 22 for Napier, Waikokopu, and Auckland. Tne Devon is to sail finally from Auckland on July 7 ' for London, Antwerp, Avonmouth, Liverpool, Manchester, and Glasgow. THE CITY OF WINCHESTER. This morning the City of Winchester arrived at Port Chalmers from Bluff to continue loading. The vessel has a crew of coolies. She was to load 26,000 carcases of lamb, 12.000 bales of wool, and 500 crises of rabbits and tallow. Tho City of Winchester is under the command of Captain A. S. Reay, who has with him the following officers: — First. Mr Scrymgeour; second, Air W. B. Thomas; third, Mr A. Durrant; chief engineer, Air J. M. Farquhar; second, Air H. R. Clark; third, Mr F. W. Cove; fourth, Mr J. Court; fifth, Mr R. Hunter. Air W. A. Wilkie is first refrigerating engineer, and Air W. 8. Whiteside second. From Port tho vessel will proceed to Wanganui, Wellington, and Auckland; thence, on about Juno 28, to London via Cape Horn. VESSELS IN WIRELESS CALL.
