THE LUTINE BELL. There hangs in the underwriters’ room at Lloyd’s, in Loudon, the bell salved in 1859 from the bullion ship Lutine, wrecked sixty years before (says the ‘ Daily Chronicle’). Many guide books on London mention this,- but show a decided confusion of ideas as to its present use. One writes of the joy there is when it is sounded, for it means that some overdue ship has arrived safely. Another says that the hell is the harbinger of evil, for its ringing means the total loss of some good ship. AA’liat really happens is this: AVhon importantnews has come through the bell i» struck once, and the. resulting silence is tense, for if it is not struck again a ship has gone, and large sums will have to be paid up. A second stroke, however, is heard .with joy, for it signifies that a missing vessel nas been reported safe in port. VESSELS IN WIRELESS CALL.
