RUSSIAN MINERS
Hi THEORY AND IN PRACTICE WORSE OFF THAN BRITISH WORKERS. Frees Association—By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, Juno 8. (Received June 9, at 12.10 p.ra.) In the House of Commons the fact that much Russian money was coming to help the British miners invested special interest in Sir Henry PageCroft’s question: “What are the working conditions of the Russian coal miners?” Mr G. R, Lane-Fox (Minister of Mines) replied that the Soviet code laid down six hours a day, fortytwo hours’ continuous work, with a day of rest weekly; but he understood that the Russians actually worked eight, and even ten, hours a day, earning between 25s and 27s 6d weekly; therefore, as regards both wages and conditions, the Russians were in a desperate condition compared with the British miners.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
