INTERNATIONAL LABOR
THE GENEVA MEETING INSPECTION OF MIGRANTS. A SHARP DISCUSSION. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright GENEVA, June 4. In an addendiun to the procesvorbal of the committee on emigration, which has been published in its final form, there appears a sharp passage between the Italian delegate, Mr Beasley (Australia), and the chairman. It appears that the Italian delegate stated that Italy could not adhere to tho convention, which would involve abandoning her rights to the inspection of immigrants in favor of another system of inspection. Ho proposed an additional form of words calculated to obviate the necessity of making the inspection compulsory, but simplifying the present methods. Mr Beasley is reported to have sard that the conference bad to_ face the Italian amendment in a candid manner, as the delegation was either putting it forward to wreck the whole scheme or else had a motive known only to_ its own Government. Whatever the idea was behind the measures the workers must view the proposal with grave suspicion, because of the forms of organisation prevailing in that cornice Chairman, intervening, said that each member of the Labor organisation, inside its own frontiers, set up what forms of organisation it considered suitable, and be must protest strongly against Mr Beasley’s insinuations. His remarks were much to be regretted. . . , , , ~ Professor Guiannmi thanked the chairman for his protest, and said that he would have carried the matter further, but for tho effective intervention of the chairman. The conference considered the objections lodged against the Fascist workers’ delegate and the Indian employers’ representative, who after a vote, wore unanimously admitted as accredited. Late to-day tho emigration convention was discussed, ana many amendments were submitted. It is very doubtful whether the conference will accept the final drafts as a convention or make recommendations only. The conference rejected the eighth clause of the convention, dealing with the simplification of the inspection of emigrants.—A. and N.Z, Cable.
