CAR CRASHES INTO ENGINE

SERIOUS CROSSING SMASH ONE WOMAN INJURED LUCKY ESCAPE OF CHILDREN. [Pkb United Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, May 31. A serious accident occurred at 5.15 p.m. on Saturday, when a motor car driven by Stanley Walker, of Christchurch, collided with the ChristchurehSouthbridge train at Prebbleton crossing. There were four adult passengers, two children, and two infants in the car at the time.

Mrs Lucy Gamble, Grafton street, was the only passenger to receive serious injury. She was taken to Christchurch Hospital suffering from concussion of the brain. The driver had his left leg hurt and his body severely bruised.

Walker did not hear the warning whistle, and, thinking that the line was clear, he prepared to cross it. However, when a few feet from the lino he saw the train, and immediately applied his brakes. The car swerved, but the driver could not clear the train, apd dashed into the rear of the engine, the car being smashed to pieces. The injured were conveyed to Lincoln in the guard's van.

Mrs Gamble’s condition is now improving. The others have returned to their homes.
