ORPHANS’ CLUB
ANNUAL REPORT
The twentv-seventh annual report of the Dunedin Orphans’ Club contains the following clauses: — The membership at the dose of the season was '244, as compared with 243 the previous year. The financial year began with a. credit balance _ot L2J and a balance of assets over liabilities of £209, and closed with a credit balance of £3 and a balance of assets over liabilities of £233. The hard-up and character night proved highly successful. The prizes wore awarded as follow :—Dro. ’ G. A. Wychorly (“Monty”) first, Bro, C. IV. Sniidstrum (bargeman) second. Other characters—Bro. O. Balk (warrior in armor) first. Bro. A. Horwood (scarecrow) second. Ladies’ night, held in the Savoy, was largely attended. Each lady guest as she entered the ball was presented with a box of chocolates, upon the lid of which was printed the club’s emblem and the words of t ie opening and closing odes, while in the souvenir programme each item was wittily specified. The South Canterbury Savage Club at Timaru and the Christchurch Savage Club were visited by a large party from this club on August 28 and 29. A most enjoyable trip was reported. The first combined meeting of Orphans and Savage .Clubs of the dominion was bold in- Dunedin on February 10 in the Masonic Flail at the invitation of the Dunedin Orphans Club. There was a largo attendance, and the programme was supplied by tho visitors. There were representatives from a large number of clubs. A conference of delegates from the clubs was also held, when matters of interest were dealt with, and an organisation of kindred clubs agreed upon. The following members qualified this year for seniority bars: —Bros. Thos. Bacbop, E. A. Duncan, J. S. Douglas, C. IV. Hannah. J. B. M'Connell, J. St-enhouse, J. S. Sinclair, P. Young, and A. Dickinson. By kind permission of tlio directors of the New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition your executive was able to entertain the children from the various city orphanages at tho Exhibition on Saturday, November 23, 1925. The fund collected from the members of the club for the purpose was ample, and the children highly appreciated the outing, and many letters were received thanking tho club for the treat. During tho season the chib suffered loss by the death of Bro. R. T. Wheeler and Bro. F. Arthur. The thanks of the chib are due to Bro. H. F. Davie and the members of the orchestra, the dull pianist (Bro. J. A. Haggitt), the club artist (Bro. IV. J. Hutton), tho Programme Committee, the performers, the stewards, the auditors, and the Press; also to the following members who acted as chairman during the season The president (Bro. R. Hudson) and Bros. H. F. Nees, T. IV. Dobbic, 11. Turner. IV. R. Waters, A. Sligo, G. A. Wychorly, H. Livingstone Tapley.
