PRACTICE GAMES All the local clubs held practice matches in view of tho first grade matches commencing on Saturday next. IN OTHER CENTRES WELLINGTON. The season opened on Saturday, though the championship matches win not bo commenced until a later date. Athletic and Berhamporo drew, 6 points each; Wellington beat Marist, 8 points to 3 points; .University 23 points beat Old Roys 8 points. Oriental had an easy t?i'n over Hutt, 28 points to nil. Tho old rivals, Petouo and Poneko, met in the Tom Cross benefit match before about 4,000 spectators. _ Potone played a strong team, including tho three Nicholls. Poneko led in tho first spell, 6-0; but in tho second spell, assisted by a wind, Petono ran up a good score, a remarkably good exposition of football being given by Mark Nicholls. He kicked a goal from a mark, converted two tries scored by others, and ■scored two tries himself, converting one. Ho thus secured 15 points out of a total o£ 21 points. CHRISTCHURCH. Tho season was opened in fine but warm weather. Several practice games were played, tho senior matches resulting Christchurch 20 points, Albion 20 points; Old Boys 6 points, University 5 points.
