CHAMPIONSHIP ATHLETIC MEETING
On Friday and Saturday next llio finest championship amateur, athletic meeting ever seen in the dominion will he held at the Caledonian Ground. Ot course, Rose is the star performer, and many people will probably go specially out to the sports to see this “champion of champions ” try ami be.H Jits own mile record, made in Christchurch a while bade, when ho heat the famous American Olympic runner, Hahn, before 12,000 spectators. Rose is very fit, and as he leaves for Europe at the end of the month lo meet Nurmi ho is very anxious to keep his great reputation good. Along with Rose we shall see many other great athletes not much inferior to Rose in their own particular specialties. Kyle, the New Zealand quartermile champion; Leadbottc-r, the crack university sprinter from Wellington; Campbell, tho half-mile dominion champion, who can always be depended on to boat 2.2 for the distance, and against whom our local man, Olson, has a. big chance; Harvey, tho fine Wellington Dole jumper; M.'Holm, Canterbury, about the best hammer, and weightputter we have seen. Our local men have big chances in some events. Morgan and Geddcs, in the sprints, will do well, and Don Stevenson, in the jumps, will not disgrace us. The management is preparing for a record crowd, as close on 12.000 saw Rose run in Christchurch and 10,000 in Wellington. The best innovation will he the installation of four loud speakers to announce results, doing away with the unsatisfactory megaphone. The social side has not been, lost siglit of. On Friday evening the visitors will be entertained at the Otago Exhibition Court by kindness of the Commissioners. * On Saturday evening the prize-giving will take place at, the Savoy, and on Sunday tho men will be driven to Waitati for afternoon ten. Given fine weather the sports promise to ho the greatest championship meeting ever seen here. The Managing Committee is trying to arrange for patrons to he able to, reserve seats for the Saturday, but it is not yet certain" if the new plan of the grand stand wifi bo ready in time.
