SMALL STEAMER SUNK

SOME LIVES LOST [Per United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, March 1. The steamer Karu, 200 tons, out from Whangape, and hound for Australia with timber, is roportcdd sunk near Capo Maria Van Diemen. One boat got ashore. Some lives wore lost, and some of the crow are on shore. The Karu formerly belonged to tho Union Company, and was recently p irchascd by Captain Watson. [The Karu was a steel auxiliary screw' steamer with three masts, 267 tons gross, winch was built in 1901 for the Union Company. Her chief dimensions were:—Length, 137$ft; beam, 24ft lin; depth, 10ft 2in.]
