The Chamber of Deputies Customs Committee approved the Government’s proposal temporarily to increase tho Customs duties on tho minimum tarilf by 30 per cent, with tho object of counteracting the effect of the depreciated currency and protecting tho French producers.—Reuter.
FUNERAL PROCESSION
AN UNUSUAL DEMONSTRATION
PARIS, February 27. Several thousand persons assembled at Berncastol for a novel plan of campaign. Without a word they formed a huge funeral procession and marched with mournful expressions to the Foreign Office. They strode through the door, and pitched out the contents of every room, including tho _ typewriters, carpets, and matting, into a huge heap in tho street. The crowd thereupon adjourned to a convenient sq'uare and voiced their All was done quietly and without noise or disorder.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
WINE GROWERS' PERTURBED. PARIS, February 27. The wine growers ol tho Moselle region are objecting to the now special tax of 22 per cent. They declare that the tax, superimposed on -the general hard times, lias caused a heavy diminution m wine drinking.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
SENATE ADOPTS FINANCE BILL
PARIS, February 28. (Received March 1, at 1 a.m.) Tho Senate adopted by 270_ votes to 21 the entire Finance Bill, which was returned to the Chamber. Both houses adopted provisional credits for March, amounting to three milliards of francs. This was necessary owing to the delay in passing the Budget.—Reuter.
