RAVENSBOURNE REGATTA

; JELLICOE GLASS CHAMPIONSHIP WINIFRED EASILY WIKS TITLE Saturday held in store some great surprises, for who thought that the entries in yachting events tor the Ravensbourno regatta would ho exceptionally good, or that Winifred would easily defeat our recent Sanders Cup challenger (Iona) and the Canterbury boat Hetty (winner of the trophy th rough defeating five provinces). The wind was a light E.N.E. breeze, and provided practically a lead over each portion of the different courses, The crowd of onlookers in size surpassed all expectations, Commodore H. E. Mollcr said that though they were again disappointed with the weather, the regatta was a big success financially and so far as entries were concerned. Some of the finest racing in Otago Harbor for some time had been witnessed, and probably it had been brought about by the interest which had' been stimulated in yachting by the Sanders and Cornwell Cup contests. The local people had subscribed freelv, and ho thanked them, the ladies of the Hockey Club (under Miss Connor) for providing afternoon tea, the West Harbor Brass Band (under Bandmaster Mr Claude Davie), the Rowing Association, and the Otago Yacht and Motor Boat Association. Mr Moller then introduced the Mayor of Dunedin (Mr H. L. Tapley, M.R.). Mr Tapley said lie was delighted to participate 'in any event for the good of the district, and he was always prepared to do what he could to further the interests of sport financially and otherwise. He then thanked the officials of the Boating Club for the invitation to he present. Mr T. Anderson, Mayor of Port Chalmers, said that Port was looked upon us a sister borough, and it had been so regarded also during Mr Watson’s form of office. Ho was pleased to see Mr Watson present. He (the speaker) was delighted with the management of the regatta, and understood how hard it was for the officials to carry out their duties in wet weather.

Mr W. R. Waters, president of the Otago Yacht and Motor Boat Associacongratulated the people of the district upon the fine showing that had been made. He said that no doubt the interest that was taken in yachting at the present time would result in a now boat being built, to represent Otago at the next Sanders Cun contest. On tho call of the mayor, three hearty cheers were then given for tho visitors.

Mr Oscar Moller, who was the first secretary of the Raven, shonrnc Boating Club, and who came to Dunedin on behalf of the Takapnna Boating Club (Auckland), which initiated tho Cornwell Gnp contest, expressed pleasure at being present. He stated that some nineteen years ago ho had assisted many present to line the local boatshed, and lie always remembered that whatever ho knew about boating lie had received his education at Ravensbonrne. Oilier prominent boating men from other provinces and nearby clubs were present.
